Among the breakout sessions at the 2018 retreat was a presentation for board members on how to read and understand school financial reports. The presenters were iLEAD CFO Phil Oseas and Myron Breitstein, iLEAD’s Director of Client Services.
Given board members’ role in ensuring schools’ financial stability, setting and approving budgets, and ensuring adequate financial resources, the duo provided the overview as a refresher course in reading relevant financial documents such as budgets, check registers, and financial statements.
We pride ourselves on having a family of board members who devote themselves to staying up to date on iLEAD’s financial matters, and ensuring we have transparency and integrity in our dealings.

Board members attending the 2018 retreat got a crash course in effective staff management and communication skills during a breakout session led by Wendy Tucker, a partner with Procopio Law.
Tucker’s session covered the following topics:
- What it means to be a supervisor
- Communication and consistency
- Performance management
- Discipline and documentation
- Legal obligations
Managing employees, she said, is a blend of communication, motivation, and discipline. She stressed that a combination of effective communication, goodwill, and proper documentation ensures a health workplace and helps prevent litigation.
Tucker counsels organizations including charter schools, public agencies, and private companies, and her practice focuses on hiring, background checks, training, employee handbooks and policies, leaves, harassment, discrimination, investigations and terminations.

Another iLEAD All Boards Retreat has come and gone, and it’s safe to say we had a great time. We are so blessed to have a group of amazing, dedicated board members providing leadership for our schools, which is why it’s so great to have everyone in one place for a few days.
This year’s retreat kicked off with site tours of SCVi, iLEAD Lancaster, Empower Generations, and iLEAD Encino, followed by an afternoon board meeting.
After a cocktail reception and dinner at the Odyssey restaurant overlooking San Fernando Valley, co-founders and co-CEOs Amber Raskin and Dawn Evenson had a “fireside chat” discussing the current state of the iLEAD network and major accomplishments over the past 10 years.
Saturday’s sessions included legislative updates, discussion of future iLEAD initiatives, and a keynote address by Thom Markham, founder and CEO of PBL Global. Click here to watch Thom’s address, plus see photos from the weekend. The afternoon also included a series of breakout sessions for board members, covering everything from how to best tell the iLEAD story to making effective use of iLEAD’s online board meeting management system.
